Thefts from passengers' luggage drops by 77 per cent since arrests

Thieves who stole valuables from passengers luggage at Luton Airport have been jailed after being caught red-handed in a police sting.

Airport cleaners Anthony Currant, 65, of Bolingbroke Road, Luton, and Abul Hussain, 30, of Claremont Road, were handed prison sentences of six months and three months respectively at Luton Crown Court.

The pair pleaded guilty to six counts of theft by an employee after being caught by a police operation back in February, where undercover cameras were placed in an enclosed room where the belt carousel passes through with passengers' bags from inbound flights.

Footage showed the two men opening bags and removing valuables before they could be collected by passengers.

Since the men were arrested, thefts and lost property from passengers' luggage has dropped by 77 per cent.
