Barnfield West Academy will remain open to students
A Luton secondary school will remain open despite a male student testing positive for swine flu.
Barnfield West Academy, in Emerald Road, will not be closing to students after seeking advice from local health officials.
NHS Luton confirmed that a pupil at the school, who has shown minor symptoms of the illness, has received treatment for the virus and is said to be recovering well at home.
Gerry Taylor, director of public health for Luton, said: "Following a risk assessment the school has been advised that no further actions are necessary at present and the school will remain open as usual.
"The Health Protection Agency, NHS Luton and the local authority are working with the school to monitor the situation closely.
"We would like to reassure parents and local residents that unless you have flu-like symptoms and are being tested for swine flu, there is no need to stop your normal everyday activities, such as going to work or school."
Pupils and staff have been reminded to remain extra vigilant and to maintain good basic hygiene to reduce the risk of infection.
Symptoms are similar to seasonal flu infections and include fever, fatigue, lack of appetite, coughing and sore throat. Anyone displaying these symptoms is advised to stay at home and contact their GP or call NHS Direct on 0845 46 47.
