Drivers caught in the resulting motorway jams

Motorists faced long delays after incidents on both the north and southbound carriageways of the M1 during the Tuesday morning rush hour. Police were called at about 8.45am when six people jumped out of the back of a lorry that had pulled onto the hard shoulder just before Junction 10.

The group ran across a field towards the rugby club at Stockwood Park but were caught by officers and are now in custody. A spokesman for Bedfordshire Police said: "We are questioning them and it is likely they will be handed over to immigration officers."

The lorry driver is helping officers with their enquiries but is not under arrest.

There were huge tailbacks on the northbound side of the motorway after the road was closed near Junction 12 to allow debris, believed to be metal poles that had fallen from a lorry, to be cleared from the road.
