Chess round-up

Oxford's Matthew Daggitt outclassed the 94-strong field to triumph at the Bedford Junior Open Chess Congress at Bedford Modern School on Sunday.

The annual U18 event, which is the qualifier for the prestigious London Junior Chess Championships held at the end of the year, was easily won by Daggitt with a perfect record of six wins out of six.

The U15 secition was a much tighter affair with William Knight (Guilsborough), Henry Lambley (Northampton) and Bedford Modern School's Callum Shields all sharing the spoils with four wins from six games.

Patrick McKenna (Oxford) and Marcus Rose (Northampton) were inseparable in the U12 category with five wins and a draw each.

David Redman (Cambridge) showed style beyond his years to run away with the U10s title, while Richard Chappell (Aylesbury) impressed similarly in the U8 tournament.

Playing in her first tournament, seven-year-old Sophia Peters of Bedford Club and Castle Lower School finished a creditable third.

The team event became something of a boat race with a large Oxford contingent only narrowly holding off a small team from Cambridge.
