2,000 people join march through Bedford to mark anniversary of the birth of Guru Nanak Dev

A procession honouring a Sikh celebration marched through Bedford on Saturday (November 1) to mark the 539th anniversary of the birth of Guru Nanak Dev and the tricentenary of the death of Guru Gobind Singh.

More than 2,000 Sikhs travelled through Queens Park and Bedford, carrying gatka weapons, playing drums, and bringing a splash of colour to an otherwise dull November day.

The weekend's celebrations also included a Nishan Sahib flag ceremony at the Guru Nanak Gurdwara in Ford End Road, Queens Park, earlier on Saturday, and hymns being said at the gurdwara on Sunday.

Guru Nanak Dev is the central figure in Sikhism, and named as the first of the ten Sikh Gurus. Guru Gobind Singh was the tenth of the gurus.

Amrik Singh Jamu, general secretary of the Guru Nanak Gurdwara, said: "It all went really well, and we had around 3,000 people who came to the various events.

"We had people come from other gurdwaras, and from Shiromani Akali Dal UK who attended and enjoyed seeing Bedford."
