Dimming street lighting on main roads and turning lampposts off all together in rural areas are two measures being considered by council bosses to save money
Bedford Borough Council is responsible for more than 14,000 lampposts and upgrading them all with energy efficient lamps would cost the taxpayer more than £16million.

Council bosses will therefore look at introducing LED street lights, but do not know what the cost would be.

Dimming lights on main roads, turning lampposts on later and off earlier and turning lights off between midnight and 6am in rural areas are also proposed.
