Industry gives way to housing

AC-Delco’s vast factory was a major employer in Dunstable from 1934 until its closure (as Trico Products) in 2003.

It is seen in the foreground of this aerial photo, taken in 1957.

The firm, which made sparking plugs and other components for the motor industry, stood alongside the Watling Street in north Dunstable.

The housing estate around new roads named Vauxhall Way and Delco Place is on the site now.

The remaining turf of Delco’s attractive sports ground, on the corner of Brewers Hill Road, can still be seen today.

But the other major sports ground in the area, home of Waterlow’s numerous sports clubs, is now covered by another housing development.

You can see part of one of the Waterlow football pitches in the bottom right corner of the photo.

Dunstable North railway station and the town’s gas holders are on the other side of Brewers Hill Road, joining Maidenbower Avenue and Westfield Road.
