Special training for volunteers

Plans for late-night patrols by new 'Street Pastors' in Dunstable town centre have won praise from leading figures in the community.

Specially trained Christian volunteers will be out on the streets from 10pm on Fridays through to 4am on Saturdays under the scheme.

They will be acting as Good Samaritans, offering a listening ear and practical help to anyone in need, especially youngsters and vulnerable people.

South West Beds MP Andrew Selous told Dunstable Today: "I am delighted that this scheme is being launched locally.

"Reductions in street crime have been achieved across the country as a result of similar initiatives, and I very much hope we will see reductions in crime in Dunstable and Houghton Regis as a result of this excellent initiative."

A launch meeting has been held in Dunstable's Priory Church, where guests included community leaders and VIPs.

Beds Chief Constable Gillian Parker said that she "totally and utterly" welcomed the scheme.

The start date has not yet been announced, but the Street Pastors will be undergoing training, include first aid skills, over the next few months.
