She serves children and their parents during her long service

Janet Taverner has been satisfying the appetites of children at Streetfield Middle School since 1980.

And on Friday, the grandma hung up her apron for the final time.

Speaking about her work at the school, she said: "I've enjoyed it and I've had lots of happy years there."

She added: "I'll miss all the children and the staff."

Deputy head Alex Robinson said: "We are really proud that someone felt so strongly about the school, that they stayed for 28 years.

"We are proud of everything she achieved, through all the changes at the school, including the introduction of healthy school dinners, she always ensured the kids got a good value tasty meal everyday."

She was presented with two bouquets of flowers and vouchers from her former colleagues.

The children gave her a special book they had made, which included 400 messages of best wishes.
