Owner says trade in 'freefall'

The owner of one of Dunstable's best known flower shops has said it was forced to shut because business in the town has gone into freefall.

Hilary Fitzpatrick took charge of Lunaria in High Street South nine years ago, but said the last three years had been too much of a struggle.

She decided to shut the shop, which backs out onto Middle Row, four weeks ago after deciding enough was enough.

Hilary said: 'When I took it on there were a lot more shops open to bring people into the town. Now the shops are closing people don't want to shop in Dunstable.

"Because there's a lot of empty shops and a lot of charity shops in the town, I think it's getting to be quite a poor town and people don't want to shop here anymore, they'd rather go further afield.

"You've only got to see all the boards outside the shops, it looks awful."
