This, believe it or not, was the scene in Luton Road, Dunstable, in March 1957.
The traffic-free view was taken by a photographer standing on the old railway bridge, now a busway, looking in the Luton direction.
The building on the left, now the site of a McDonald’s, was once a hat-renovating company.
It became a builder’s merchants and then a dairy, next to Vauxhall Motors’ Bedford Truck factory.
The Vauxhall site is now occupied, in part, by a Sainsbury’s store.
The historic old photo is part of the Yesteryear series published each week in the Herald & Post’s sister papers, the Luton News and Dunstable Gazette, on sale on Wednesdays.
Many of the Dunstable photos have now been collected into a new book, Dunstable Through Time, which also includes matching colour photos of the scenes today,
It’s available from the author, John Buckledee, at 69 Derwent Drive, Dunstable, LU6 3PB.
Price is £17 which includes the cost of postage and packing.
