Money expects stiff test from Grays
New loan signings Kevin Pilkington and Mark Nwokeji have gone straight into Luton Town's squad for tomorrow's trip to Grays Athletic.
Keeper Pilkington, 35, has signed on a one-month loan deal from moneybags League Two outfit Notts County, to provide goalkeeping cover, as Luton number one Mark Tyler is struggling with a back injury and is likely to be out for a couple of weeks.
Raw striker Nwokeji, meanwhile, has joined from Dagenham & Redbridge until the New Year and will give boss Richard Money options up front as Liam Hatch is likely to be out until next year after having a second operation on his troublesome ankle injury.
Forward Steve Basham is also likely to miss out on Saturday with a calf injury, left-back Lewis Emanuel is still not quite fit, but it is hoped that combative midfielder Keith Keane will be available for selection again after shrugging off a groin problem.
But Money is anticipating a tough test, saying: "I will pick a team which I'm 100 per cent convinced is the right 11 to get the right result at Grays.
"It makes no difference to me where they are in the table. Going away from home in any league is very, very difficult.
"If we don't get the right result and performance tomorrow then what we've achieved in the cup this week counts for nothing."
And he believes Town's 3-0 defeat of them in the fourth qualifying round of the FA Cup will have absolutely no relevance on the fixture, with the hosts likely to play a number of players who were unavailable for that game.
Money continued: "It doesn't matter a jot, it doesn't mean a thing. It will be totally and utterly different. I don't think one game will have any relevance on the other.
"We (the coaching staff) are all pretty familiar with the ground. We've all been there for pre-season friendlies and reserve fixtures I'm sure at some point in our careers and a number of our squad too.
"Gary (Brabin) did go and catch them last week, but that's us being as professional as we can."
Freddie Murray, who is on loan at Kenilworth Road from Grays, is allowed to play, as is Town defender George Beavan for Grays, who is in Essex on a reciprocal basis.
On the availability front, Money continued: "Steve Basham is still troubled by a calf injury but we are hopeful Keith Keane can be available.
"We've got a goalkeeper and a centre-forward in today. Kevin Pilkington is in from Notts County - he has vast experience. He has played a terrific amount of fixtures in these types of games.
"We are in a situation where we can rely on the players we have on the pitch and it's very important to have another keeper."
On Tyler's injury, Money said: "I think it's much better we take him out of the firing line for two or three weeks.
"I think he has had a problem with his back at one of his previous clubs - a disc bulge. It's not serious but he is in some discomfort at the moment."
And he said Nwokeji would help cover for the absence of Hatch and Basham, saying: "That's the reason we brought Nwokeji from Dagenham. John Still loves him. Gary (Brabin) went to see him play on Tuesday and the two of them have persuaded me it's the right decision to bring him in.
"He is about 5ft 9ins, but very explosive."
And Money was pleased with the way Luton had competed against Rochdale and the confidence it has generated in his squad, but was puzzled by the way the media had refrained from using the word "giantkilling".
He added: "I did find that a little bit strange. We have got to try and take away the name plates and realise where both teams are. We are in the Conference and on the slide and they're second in League Two.
"Confidence is a big factor, especially at this level, and we can only gain confidence from our performances in the last two cup ties, so long may it continue.
"The players know they did a good job and stuck to the gameplan and discipline we set out and were happy they were able to see it through."
