On-loan striker hoping for goals galore at Kenilworth Road

Prolific non-league marksman Mark Nwokeji has promised to give the Hatters everything during his stay at Kenilworth Road.

The Dagenham & Redbridge hitman joined the Town on loan until the New Year last week and made his debut as a second-half substitute in the
2-0 victory at Grays Athletic on Saturday.

And the 27-year-old is hoping to get the chance to make his home bow when Cambridge United visit Kenilworth Road on Saturday, in Town's first return fixture of the season.

He said: "The gaffer (John Still) has shown a lot of faith in me. Richard Money has just come into the job and I feel privileged he can rely on me to add something to the team.

"It's his reputation on the line bringing in certain players so I've got to do well.

"Dagenham are doing really well so I hope to go back and do well for Dagenham, but wherever I am I will give 100 per cent. My aim here is to score goals but, if at the same time I affect play and help Luton to get points on the board, I will be equally happy."

Nwokeji scored goals for fun at Staines Town in the Isthmian Premier League but is on the comeback trail after suffering a nasty knee injury.

He said: "I've been out with quite a long-term injury, with my anterior cruciate ligament for seven months.

"It just feels good to be back playing. I played a few reserve matches at Dagenham and haven't lost my goalscoring touch.

"That's why I'm down here, to test a few defences and bring something different to the team. In certain areas maybe Luton are lacking a bit of pace and I'm here to add something to the team."

Nwokeji is said to possess "explosive" pace and believes defences will underestimate his ability in the air because of his diminutive stature.

He continued: "A lot of defenders tend to underestimate me because of my height, but people who know me know I've got a good leap."

On Saturday's win at Grays, he said: "I've played at grounds like that before. You have to have your concentration level a lot higher because the pitches aren't the best."

And while most of his goals have come in non-league, he also believes he is good enough to make it in the League, saying: "I did score a lot of goals while I was at Staines. Playing full-time is a step up, but I always knew I was capable. Injuries had kept me back."

Nwokeji scored what first team coach Kevin Watson described as a "terrific goal" from 25 yards in Luton Town reserves' 3-1 home defeat to Ipswich Town's second string on Tuesday.

And Nwokeji hopes to replicate that for the first team in the near future, adding: "Those are the sorts of goals I'm used to scoring, getting the ball on the edge of the box, turning and it was quite a good strike.

"We created a few chances and I don't think the 3-1 scoreline was important because it was more for the fitness levels of the lads."
