Airport gives £50,000 for charity grants

London Luton Airport has committed a further £50,000 to its Community Trust Fund in 2014. The fund supports a range of local charities and community organisations across the Three Counties and issued 23 awards to local groups last year alone.

The fund will be independently administered by the Bedfordshire and Luton Community Foundation which monitors and evaluates grants to ensure they deliver significant impact in the social, environmental and economic life of the community. Since it was established in 2009, £230,000 has been distributed to 157 groups, and the Foundation has calculated that there have been over 13,339 direct beneficiaries and over 89,387 indirect beneficiaries of the scheme to date.

Diverse FM, a Luton based radio station broadcasting in the Bedfordshire area, received a grant in 2013 which enabled it to train 10 young people in qualifications such as radio broadcasting level 1, as well as providing tips on CV writing and invaluable work experience.

Mehbub Koyes, Manager at Diverse FM, said: “This grant has been used to enhance and better the community in which we live. At Diverse FM, we engage with young people in the local area, helping them develop skills and build self esteem, all of which strengthen the bonds between our diverse communities.
