Plans to change Arriva bus routes from August 31, have been altered following discussions between the bus company and customers.

The decision follows concerns expressed by a councillor in the Gazette when Arriva announced revised services covering Dunstable and Houghton Regis. Councillor Julian Murray said: “It may be good for business, but I am worried that it may not be good for the public.”

But Linsey Frostick, Arriva’s regional marketing manager, said this week: “Following discussions with various stakeholders and customers, our plans for Houghton Regis have been changed.”

Route A remains the same, with an improved evening service on Mondays to Saturdays. Late night journeys to the airport have been removed, but a link from the station can be made using the 757.

Route 37 has been withdrawn. Route 38 continues as Monday to Saturday daytime every 30 minutes, but will not serve the Dog and Duck loop on any journey. Route 38A will operate Monday to Saturday evenings and Sundays. It will not serve Parkside and Tithe Farm Road.

Route 39 will be a new route interworking with the 38. It will operate every 30 minutes between the Dog and Duck, Parkside and Luton and will not serve Dunstable.

The journeys will be Dog and Duck and Dunstable, Route A all the time, Dog and Duck and L&D Hospital and Luton, Routes 39 and A.

Parkside to Dunstable, Route 39 Monday to Saturday daytime, Tithe Farm to Dunstable, Route A all the time and Route 38 Monday to Saturday daytime. Tithe Farm and Parkside to the hospital, Route 38 Monday to Saturday daytime and a connection required during evenings and Sundays with A and 38.

Councillor Murray said: “They seem to have addressed the ‘two fares’ objection by running the 38 nearly where it is going at the moment. With the Dog and Duck bit taking only a couple of minutes and being only a couple of hundred yards, I am confused why they are not leaving things as they are. We have to accept that the increase in the total number of passengers has not met expectations and that there has been a shift from the 38 to the A route.”
