A NEW shop in Dunstable town centre is the icing on the cake for baking fans.

Hayley Pfeifer is hoping to taste sweet success with the launch of The Cake House.

She makes celebration cakes to order, sells cupcakes and stocks sugarcraft items and cake decorating and baking equipment.

And the team is also running children’s cupcake parties and workshops, and sessions for adults on how to make and decorate cakes.

On Saturday, September 24, guests Sharon Warboys and Sharon Knott from Facebook campaign Don’t Let Dunstable Die officially opened the new shop, which has entrances off High Street South and Ashton Square.

Hayley is no newcomer to the town, as her business was previously based in Chiltern Road for five years, under the name Crafty Creations.

She decided to change the name as some people mistakenly thought it was a crafts shop.

Staff member Lauren Thomas and Hayley both scooped bronze awards in top show Cake International last year.

Hayley was overwhelmed by the support they received on opening day, from loyal supporters, new customers and other local businesses.

Asked why she chose Dunstable as her business base, she said: “I love the town. It’s all about what you know, and I know the area, I know the town and I wanted to ‘keep it local’, really. I’m feeling very positive about the future.

“I think the location will be key to our success.”

> Dunstable also has a new arts and crafts shop, with the launch of So Crafty.

Natasha Karaphillides, whose career has included working at Central Bedfordshire College as a health and social care lecturer, has set up the business.

The High Street South shop, near Lovers Walk, held a launch party on Friday, September 23.

It sells everything needed for all sorts of craftwork, to make anything from jewellery to sock monkeys.

Studio sessions are available for crafts such as ceramics painting, making clay Fimo charms and Decopatch work, a type of decoupage-style decorative art.

She also runs craft parties and workshops for adults and children, including sessions on decorating cupcakes, cookies and cakes.

Natasha said: “I have had so many lovely comments from people. They’ve said it is a lovely shop and they are glad to see things like this in Dunstable.”
