Priory View, the new independent living scheme in Dunstable, has been shortlisted for Inside Housing’s Top Sixty Developments 2016.

The £17m scheme has been built by Central Bedfordshire Council and is shortlisted in the ‘Older Peoples Development of the year’ category, alongside tough competition.

The idea of independent living schemes is to offer older people the chance to live independently for longer.

Cllr Carole Hegley, Executive Member for Social Care and Housing, said: “We’ve heard that the number of entries was higher than ever so to be shortlisted as a finalist is a huge achievement.

“We’re immensely proud of the scheme and are pleased that it’s being recognised nationally.

“That, added to the fantastic feedback we have had so far from our residents, makes us very happy indeed!”

Priory View is a five storey building located within easy walking distance of Dunstable town centre, with 83 one and two bedroom apartments on shared ownership or social rent basis.

Cllr Hegley added: “Priory View is more than alternative accommodation that an older person has to ‘accept’ because their home is no longer suitable for them.

“It is instead a place to celebrate life.

“The facilities are fantastic but it was really designed to build a sense of community and for people to make new friends and be able to support each other.”

The building includes a soon-to-be-open shop and a hairdressing salon, restaurant and café on the ground floor designed around a light filled central rotunda.

For residents and the community there are also three beauty, relaxation and therapy rooms, and a rooftop garden and five recreation rooms for residents to socialise in.

The building was designed by Dunstable architect, Kyle Smart Associates.

The final result will be announced on October 14 this year.
