A Dunstable couple have won an award for their hard work in looking after their two young foster grandchildren.
Nick Waterson and Beverley Kenny won Brilliant Family and Friends Foster Carer at the Celebration of Fostering evening held at Woburn Safari Park.
The couple, who won a hamper, said: “We were shocked but it was a lovely surprise for us. We would like to say a big thank you to everyone who has helped us along the way to get us to where we are now.”
The evening, which saw a number of carers presented with awards to mark their outstanding achievements, was attended by more than 170 people.
Councillor Carole Hegley, executive member for social care and housing, said: “Our foster carers do a fantastic job providing a safe, stable and nurturing environment so children can flourish and meet their full potential.
“That is not always easy, and they face many challenges, often on a daily basis. However, they are dedicated, resilient and patient, and stick with our children because the rewards of fostering far outweigh the challenges.
“I was struck by the stories I heard, the numbers of children foster carers have cared for and to see so many happy faces.”
Richard Carr, chief executive, who helped to present the awards, said: “It was an honour and a pleasure to be able to attend the Celebration of Fostering evening and to meet many of our foster carers and hear about the fantastic work they are doing.
“Our fostering team is doing a brilliant job helping to recruit and retain foster carers, but there is always a need for more people to make a difference in children’s lives.”
