The Mayor and Mayoress of Dunstable donned their mayoral chains and cycle clips for a special bicycle ride in their honour, organised by Luton and Dunstable Cycling Forum.

Councillor John Chatterley and his wife Ann joined 20 local cyclists for the seven-mile ride, which showcased some of the traffic-free cycling routes around Luton and Dunstable.

The couple joined the group as they cycled from the bandstand in Grove House Gardens, along the Luton Dunstable Busway to Stanton Road, returning to Dunstable via the NCR6 cycle route.

Since September, the Cycling Forum has been running free cycle rides for anyone wishing to get some exercise while learning about the cycle routes in the area.

The rides are led by experienced Sustrans volunteers and are of varying lengths, allowing cyclists at all levels to join in. The group is keen to promote local cycle routes and works in close partnership with Central Bedfordshire’s Travel Choices and Sustrans.

Councillor Chatterley said: ‘It was a real pleasure to cycle along the traffic-free routes. It’s surprising how much cycling you can do in the area without having to negotiate difficult roads.”

Central Beds councillor Nigel Young said: “With spring here, it’s a great time to dust off your bike and get some fresh air. The Local Sustainable Transport Fund has allowed Travel Choices to put a number of cycle routes in place in Dunstable and Houghton Regis. These, along with the Busway cycle path, offer plenty of opportunity for residents to get out and about on their bikes.”

Information on the rides and advice on cycling can be found at the Travel Choices Hub in Ashton Square, Dunstable. Details are also shared on the Cycling Forum’s Facebook page.
