Have your say

Take a look at the rather bizarre sign spotted in Luton town centre last week and cue the music from the monster hit song by The Automatic...

What’s that coming over the hill, is it a Dalek, is it a Dalek?

Have you seen a Dalek?

Have you seen a Dalek?

Some prankster has installed a rather professional looking sign at the entry to the busway along New Bedford Road – you know, the location where all those motorists used to drive up after being urged to take the turning by their sat-navs.

Although it’s a very neat sign, I’m sure it’s not been done by Luton Borough Council (as councils tend to all have sense of humour bypasses). Having said, that the council tried a big electronic sign to keep motorists from straying onto the route so maybe this is a new approach to scare people off.

Anyway, the photo was initially posted online by Luton and Dunstable Cycling Forum who told me it turned up overnight on February 23-24

Robin Cowan, forum chairman, said: “I cycled to work on the Tuesday morning and saw the well-made sign had been put up and it made me smile.

Since the sign has been put up, I have not spotted a Dalek using the path, so they are clearly having the desired effect.

Luton and Dunstable Cycling Forum chairman Robin Cowan

“This is a well meaning/light-hearted protest at the bike barriers on the shared use path that runs by the guided bus route. I do not know who has made the sign but I do admire the humour behind it.”

If you look at the barriers closely you’ll see Daleks are the right shape to fit through them, so they obviously need a sign to stop them using the shared-use path.

Robin added: “Since the sign has been put up, I have not spotted a Dalek using the path, so they are clearly having the desired effect.

“This is the second time these signs have been put up. The last time was January 5 this year but they only lasted three days before someone with a humour bypass ripped it down.”

Robin said the Luton and Dunstable Cycling Forum regularly talk to officers of both Luton and Central Beds councils about how to improve the route.

He said: “There are 20 bike barriers on the bus route which are recognised by cyclist as one of the two most important issues requiring improve along with the surface.

“The councils are listening to us and are about to make improvements to six of the barriers and a section of the path has just been resurfaced.

“The shared use path is a good route way to cycle between Luton and Dunstable.”

Do you know who’s behind the Dalek notice? See my contact details above.

And let me know too if you spot in the coming days that the sign has been exterminated!
