Dunstable volunteer Karen Phillips has described 2014 as “an exciting year” after the charity she represents was recognised with a national award.

Last year Greyhound Rescue West of England (GRWE) took the title of Animal Charity Team of the Year at the Association of Dogs and Cats Homes’ award ceremony, organised by Petplan.

Karen, pictured second left, often seen at local awareness days with three-legged GRWE sponsor dog Freddie, said the charity’s Eastern Region team have been particularly busy since the award.

“We have attracted a lot of attention,” she said.

“I think the highlight so far has been when Freddie and I were interviewed live on local radio.

“This award is a validation of the quality of our work nationally, but especially our Eastern Region team is going from strength to strength.”

GRWE won the award with a team which rehomed 516 greyhounds and lurchers last year, but has just one paid employee.

Rescue, rehabilitation and rehoming are carried out by volunteers who also raise funding for the independent charity.
