Now that 2013 has ended, we thought we would take a look back on the events that marked a very special year for Dunstable’s Augustine Priory.

The year marked 800 years since the dedication of the Priory Church of St Peter, and the town enjoyed a whole host of events to celebrate the occasion.

Adults and children alike got into the medieval spirit when the Siege Society held a battle re-enactment in Priory Gardens in May.

In July, Priory Church hosted an organ concert, while Manshead Archaeological Society held an talk about human bones.

The calendar of events culminated in a weekend of celebrations starting on the actual anniversary, Friday October 18.

Representatives from Dunstable’s twin towns of Porz am Rhein and Bourgoin Jallieu joined in with the Dedication Festival Eucharist on Friday , followed by a Civic Service of Celebration on the Sunday (October 20).

Dunstable Mayor John Chatterley said: “We were honoured by the presence of Her Majesty’s Lord-Lieutenant together with many others that had come to join us for this momentous occasion.”
