Four members of the bar team at Dunstable’s Sugar Loaf pub had a close shave on Easter Sunday.

It was to show solidarity with their colleague Jen McCrea, 19, who’s facing surgery for a second time to remove a brain tumour.

General manager Jo Thorp said: “I’ve now got seven bald – very bald! – staff. A couple of customers also got involved and had their heads shaved too.

“Although the fundraiser was in aid of Cancer Research UK, it was much more about us supporting Jen.

“She’s an absolute inspiration to everyone, one of the bravest girls I’ve ever met.”

Jo admits she couldn’t face having her own long hair cut so decided to have a tattoo instead.

But freshly shorn trainee manager Adam Butcher is slowly to get to grips with his new look.

He confessed: “I didn’t think I’d like it, but the feedback from the ladies has been amazing!

“We all had a great day and it’s good to feel we’ve done something worthwhile.”

Jen, of Beale Street, whose tumour was first diagnosed four years ago, said she was “very proud” of her friends and colleagues.

“We were all laughing and joking and taking pictures of each other,” she said. “It was a group effort and it was a good feeling to be in it together.”

The former Northfields and Harlington Upper pupil will have an operation on June 23 to remove the tumour.

The young duty manager thought she’d beaten the big C until about eight months ago when she started havinbg seizures.

She said: “It’s risky because it’s very deep-seated. But a specialist surgeon is flying in from Milan and that makes me feel a lot better.

“I’ve also had a lot of support from family and friends and the Sugar Loaf team.”

Jo added: “She’s an amazing lady – she’s already talking about what she’s going to do when she comes back to work.

“We’re just £250 shy of our £2,000 target so any further donations would be very welcome.”
