Savvy shops and bright businesses were quick to look at a window of opportunity in the festive season – the annual Dunstable Christmas Shop Front Competition.
For the third year running, the winner was The Flower Corner, in Eleanor’s Cross.
There was high praise, too, for Becky’s Boutique, of High Street South/Ashton Square, which was selected as the runner-up.
A special commendation was awarded to Dunstable Community Church, of High Street North.
The church was commended both for its Christmas display and the ongoing and creative use of the window throughout the year.
Dunstable mayor Councillor Pat Staples and Councillor Nigel Young, chairman of the Dunstable Joint Committee, were the judges with the tough task of choosing a winner.
On December 20, the judges toured the area to take a close look at the shop fronts.
In all, there were 16 entries for the 2012 competition, sponsored by your Gazette.
Shop fronts earned points for festivity, originality and use of space, and there was a very high standard of entries.
Judges decided that The Flower Corner deserved the Most Festive Christmas Shop Front title.
The winner’s accolades include a quarter-page advertisement in the Dunstable Gazette.
Dunstable Town Council, a member of the Dunstable Joint Committee, says the aim of the competition is to encourage businesses to think imaginatively about the use of their premises, to improve their trade and to make the most positive impact they can on the High Street.
That’s a vital approach to attract shoppers not only at Christmas, but throughout the year, too.
