The pool at Houghton Regis Leisure Centre is expected to be reopened by the start of the summer holidays, a public meeting was told.
Houghton Regis Leisure Centre Action Group campaigners organised the meeting, which turned into a celebration of Central Beds Council’s decision to relaunch the pool.
Changing rooms will be refurbished and roof repairs will be carried out.
Council representatives attended the meeting, at Hawthorn Park Community Primary School, Houghton.
News of the relaunch decision was announced last week, as reported in the Gazette.
South West Beds MP Andrew Selous said: “The rebirth of the leisure centre is fantastic news for the whole area and I am delighted at the massive increase in the number of people who have joined the leisure centre.
“I know that the closure of the swimming pool was a great upset to many people and I am very pleased that local residents and schoolchildren will be able to use the pool to swim again on a regular basis.”
In a statement, the action group thanked all of its members, Houghton Regis Town Council, Central Beds Council, Mr Selous, schools and businesses for their support.
The campaigners said: “It has been a long, hard fight but the result is very rewarding and we can’t wait to start swimming once again in Houghton Regis.”
And the group added: “Well done, Central Bedfordshire Council, for listening to our views and agreeing to work with us to achieve this successful outcome.”
