26-mile danger kayak feat for firefighter duo

A Dunstable firefighter and his former colleague will tackle Loch Ness in a kayak as they attempt to row 26 miles for charity.
Simon Stanton of the Dunstable Blue Watch, and Chris Luscom – now with London Fire Brigade –will embark on their “FebNess” challenge this Sunday (February 10).
As there will only be nine hours of daylight in the area, much of the journey will be made in darkness, in temperatures just over freezing – falling overboard could be fatal.
Setting off from Fort Augustus at 5am, they plan to arrive in Inverness by 7pm – raising funds for The Firefighters Charity, who help injured firefighters and their families.
Simon said: “We chose a date in February because we wanted to do it in challenging conditions.
“Kayaking on Loch Ness in the extreme cold, in darkness and when it is likely to be very windy, will certainly ensure that the conditions are challenging.
“We haven’t set ourselves an ambitious fundraising target, but we know that any money received by the Firefighters Charity is well used.”
The pair are no strangers to fundraising feats – four years ago they raised £10,000 for the same charity by driving 3,500 miles around the whole coastline of the UK.
