Banknote firm looks set to leave town
De La Rue in Dunstable
It could soon be the end of an era, as another long-established Dunstable business is expected to say goodbye to the town shortly.
The closure of banknote printing firm De La Rue’s Dunstable works is believed to be imminent.
De La Rue announced last year that it proposed to close the French’s Avenue works along with another plant in Basingstoke.
Now it is thought that the Dunstable plant is to shut down soon.
It is believed that some of the workers are relocating to posts at other De La Rue bases. The Gazette has not yet been able to confirm job loss figures.
The Dunstable operation involves currency printing and security printing to prevent fraud and counterfeiting.
When the closure proposals were announced last year, it was explained that the idea was to transfer the Dunstable plant’s functions to Gateshead.
At that time, De La Rue said it was in consultation with workers and that “the entire process should be completed within 18 months”.
