Car travel is ‘a nightmare’

WE'RE JAMMIN': Drivers have had to contend with long tailbacks in Church Street, Dunstable

Motorists are being driven to distraction by roadworks around Luton, Dunstable and Houghton Regis.

Appropriately for Hallowe’en week, trying to get around the area by car has turned into something of a horror show, with major roadworks in all three towns causing lengthy hold-ups.

In Luton, drivers have had to contend with roadworks to the Castle Street roundabout and Dallow Road, timed to take advantage of reduced traffic during half term.

Luton Borough Council also announced yesterday that it was extending its closure of Church Street, and that Hatters Way would be closed for the next two weekends between Dunstable Road and Chaul End Lane for busway work.

A council spokesman said the authority was “working hard to minimise disruption” and added: “All the works being carried out are essential road maintenance.”

In Houghton Regis, queues have built up as work takes place on a new roundabout to replace the traffic lights at the junction of High Street and Bedford Road.

The misery has continued in Dunstable, with Court Drive still one way until the end of November. Central Beds councillor Brian Spurr said the works were part of the regeneration of Dunstable.

“We know that these alterations really affect people and their journeys and are sorry for any inconvenience caused,” he said.

Motorists yesterday took to the Herald&Post Facebook page to vent their anger. Julie Neale Farmer wrote: “It’s just taken me 40 minutes to do one mile in Dunstable!”

Jeanette Lewis said: “It’s a nightmare, it can take up to an hour from Luton town centre to get up to the Inspire pool some nights.”

And Nicola Nelson added: “Took us 50 mins to get through Houghton Regis the other day. Won’t do that again!”
