Inspired by the beautiful coast and cosy tea rooms of Cornwall and Devon, an entrepreneur is turning her dreams into reality with Drift In, which opened last week.

Melinda Peach spotted a shop for rent in High Street South, Dunstable, and decided to ditch her day job in IT sales and open a tearoom.

It serves ‘proper’ tea and coffee, yummy cakes and scones, and delicious sandwiches to eat in or take away.

Melinda said: “I’ve never done anything like this before and it’s been an eye-opener, but we’ve had a good first week and it’s become really popular.

“We’ve had people coming in for business meetings and getting lunch to take away.

“My partner Paul Noon is a bit of a surfer dude, and we’ve visited Devon and Cornwall together where they have lovely tearooms.

“We’d always said we wanted to open our own there, but now we’re doing it in Dunstable. I’ve always had the vision in my head of what I wanted it to look like and this seemed the ideal opportunity.”

Dunstable born-and-bred Melinda described the tearoom as “shabby-chic” and “quaint”, and said the specialist hot drinks have been very popular, especially the winter-warmers like chocolate orange coffee and Irish coffee.

Melinda added: “I think Dunstable needed something like this – a breath of fresh air that’s completely different from your Costa Coffee or Greggs.”

Melinda plans to start an OAPs Sunday afternoon tea, as well as holding art exhibitions in the evenings.

Drift In is open from Monday to Friday 8.30am-4pm, and Saturdays 9am-2pm.
