Council acts on repairs despair

Central Beds Council have responded to residents in Mayfield Road who have raised concerns about the quality of the repair work following an arson attack last month.

A stairwell was left badly damaged by a fire that was deliberately started on Tuesday, August 14.

Since then, residents have complained that the area is still dangerous, due to large chunks of debris as well as people drinking and becoming abusive there.

Councillor Carole Hegley told the Gazette: “The damage to the building following the recent fire is considerable but I would like to reassure local residents that we are currently working hard to repair the damage and keep the building clean.

We acted straight away after the incident, keeping tenants informed of our progress, and are working closely with the police to aid their investigations.

“We have cleaned the smoke damage from the walls and a specialist team are coming in to repair the fire resistant plaster and decorations.

“The damaged windows were replaced last week and we will be reviewing the need for a new secure entry system, as the wiring for the existing system was burnt beyond repair.

When the walls have been repaired and redecorated, the damaged floor coverings will be replaced.

“Extra cleaning and inspections are being carried out twice daily and we will also be looking into other long-term solutions to avoid similar incidents in the future.”
