Crowds gather to honour the fallen

Remembrance Sunday in Dunstable

Remembrance Sunday in Dunstable

Lest we forget... crowds gathered in Dunstable and Houghton Regis on Remembrance Sunday, to pay tribute to the fallen.

Young and old honoured the memory of those who gave their lives for their country.

There were exceptionally large turnouts for the Remembrance events in both towns.

> In Dunstable, more than 400 marchers took part in the Remembrance Parade.

Crowds lined the streets as the marchers made their way from Grove House Gardens to the War Memorial in Priory Gardens, accompanied by the Dunstable Salvation Army Band.

Dunstable mayor Pat Staples took the salute at Priory House.

The Act of Remembrance and wreath-laying took place at the memorial.

A field gun marked the start and end of the two-minute silence.

The Last Post and Reveille were sounded and the Exhortation and the Kohima Epitaph were read. The Rev Richard Andrews led the gathering in prayer and gave the blessing.

A short Remembrance service was then held in Priory Church.

> In Houghton Regis, a Remembrance service was held at All Saints Parish Church, followed by an Act of Remembrance at the Memorial Stone on the village green. A wreath-laying ceremony was also held.

Father Brian Wheelhouse officiated at these events.

> The day brought sad news from the Houghton Regis branch of the Royal British Legion. Chairman Mike Corrigan announced that the branch had officially closed.

But the branch could be revived, if new members come forward. Anyone interested should contact Houghton Regis Town Council.

> Pupils at Dunstable’s Streetfield Middle School were among students who held Remembrance events.

Two memorial grounds have been created at the school. At outside assemblies, pupils attached red ribbons to memorial trelliswork, while school council members laid a wreath at each site.

Four hundred poppies were planted. School council members attended and laid wreaths at Remembrance Sunday services in Dunstable and Caddington.
