Disabled sports club needs help

With Olympic fever remaining and the Paralympics beginning, now is the perfect time to help with sports in your community.

Dunstable Leisure Centre is looking for volunteers to lend a hand on Tuesday afternoons from 1-3pm with disabled sports classes.

Dunstable and District Disabled Sports, which organises the classes, started in 1995 when a group of local sports people recognised the need for sports facilities for the disabled in Dunstable.

Since then the club has gone from strength to strength and the classes have grown in popularity.

For £1 a week for over 16s and 50p for those under, the club’s 120 members enjoy activities such as badminton, Boccia and wheelchair football.

Club treasurer Margaret Luther said: “When you’re disabled it’s important to have a nice environment to keep as active as possible. It doesn’t just motivate you but is good health-wise, too. The club has in fact become more like a social club to many of our members.”

But the increase in popularity inevitably requires an increase in helpers. The areas in which help is most required are in wheelchair football, supervision of basketball and exercise and movement to music in the dance studio.

Volunteers need not have any specific skills or qualifications, but simply be dedicated to encouraging clients to enjoy themselves.

Those interested must be over 18 and can get in contact at volunteer@action-centralbeds.org.uk or phone 01525 850559.
