Double blow for shoppers

Staples on the White Lion Retail Park is set to close

Staples on the White Lion Retail Park is set to close

News that another Dunstable superstore is set to close comes just a week after the shutdown of the town’s big Comet outlet.

A closing down sign has now gone up at office products giant Staples.

South West Beds MP Andrew Selous said: “I am really sorry to hear that. It is a blow when any shop closes, and Staples is a big store.”

Looking to the future, he spoke of the predicted new jobs which it is hoped will be generated through the town centre masterplan.

Staples is on the White Lion Retail Park, where Comet was also based.

On Monday, December 17, a Staples spokeswoman said that the store would shut in the next few weeks.

The Gazette asked if the closure would mean redundancies, and was told that where possible, staff were being “relocated”.

No further information on the jobs front was available as we went to press yesterday.

Staples is “reshaping” the business in view of its growing online sales.

The spokeswoman said: “In September, Staples announced a strategic plan to accelerate growth and better serve the evolving needs of customers.

“As part of this plan, we are reshaping our business in the UK to serve customers who increasingly shop with us online.

“Staples UK will close 23 stores out of 134 stores. We are actively working to support associates through this period of change.

“At the same time, Staples is investing in its online channel to provide customers with a seamless shopping experience across our websites and retail store network.”

She said the company is “committed to making it easy for customers to shop how and when they want”.
