Dunstable author praises late hero grandfather

A Dunstable author paid tribute to her “courageous” grandfather as he passed away last week – less than a year after helping him publish his memoirs.

War hero George Dunn – who was an integral part of the Dunkirk evacuation of 1940 – passed away at Luton and Dunstable Hospital, aged 93.

Carrie Dunn was the ghostwriter for George’s book “From the Valleys to Verulamium”, as featured by the Gazette in January.

The book – which was 20 years in the making – told the story of Mr Dunn’s emergence from childhood poverty and his extraordinary and heroic life.

Carrie – educated at Ashton Middle School and Queensbury School – told the Gazette: “My grandad’s book is the piece of work I’m most proud of. I feel so honoured that he worked with me to tell me his war memories that he’d never talked about before.

“Many people have said they enjoyed reading his stories of service during World War Two and of course the Dunkirk evacuation, but although I know he was both courageous and fortunate during that time, I will of course remember him most as a wonderful, loving grandfather, whom I will miss very much.”

A ceremony will be held at West Herts Crematorium in Garston, Watford on Thursday, November 1 at 2.40pm.

“From The Valleys To Verulamium” by Carrie Dunn is available from Waterstone’s, Amazon, and direct from publishers The History Press.
