Dunstable Street Pastors will soon be out on patrol

Good Samaritans will help those in need

Late-night patrols by Good Samaritans in Dunstable town centre, to help people in need, are now all set to start on Friday, November 27.

Dunstable Street Pastors will be 'commissioned' at a special service that night at the Methodist Church, The Square.

Afterwards, 22 trained Christian volunteers, wearing distinctive uniforms, will tour the town centre for an hour.

Then a four-strong team will head back out for the first full patrol, after a group debriefing by the Ascension Trust, who set up the nationwide scheme.

Volunteers will be out on Dunstable's streets from 10pm on Fridays through to 4am on Saturday mornings.

It is a simple, straightforward idea - to offer a listening ear and practical help to anyone in need, especially youngsters and vulnerable people.

That includes helping people to get home safely, and giving guidance on where to find support to deal with problems.

Dunstable Street Pastors chairman Simon Thomas said: "It can only be for the good. We are there purely in a pastoral role, to listen and to help where needed.

"We will just be a peaceful presence on the streets."

Street Pastors are described as 'The Church in action... on the streets', and the inter-denominational scheme was launched nationally in 2003.

The project is running in many towns and cities across the UK and has been credited with drops in crime in areas where the teams have been working.

Dunstable Street Pastors, from various churches in the area, will work hand-in-hand with other organisations, including police and local government bodies.

The pastors are appealing for more volunteers to contact co-ordinator Becky Atkins, on 0772 2638012.
