Have your say on school age range

A Dunstable lower school which is looking at possibly extending the age range of its intake of pupils is now asking for feedback about the idea.

St Mary’s Catholic Lower School wants to hear the views of parents and others about the suggestion.

At the moment, the school has pupils ranging from three to nine.

If the age range extension went ahead, the school could accept pupils aged from three to 11.

The St Mary’s team, based on the school’s campus at Caddington Turn on the A5, say that the aim is to improve education standards.

And they point out that the proposed change would bring the age range of St Mary’s pupils in line with a number of other schools which are switching from the three-tier pattern of lower, middle and upper schools to a two-tier primary and secondary system.

St Mary’s headteacher Steve Chiswell explained: “These plans are about raising the standard of education for all our pupils.

“In applying to change our upper age range, it would bring us in line with St Vincent’s Catholic Primary School and the Catholic schools in Luton whom we work closely with.

“We’d like to hear from as many parents and other interested parties as possible.

“We have arranged a public meeting to be held at the school on October 5 at 7pm, where people will be able to find out more about the proposals and ask any questions they may have.”

> All comments and responses received by the school will be considered by the governing body.

The governing body will then make the decision on whether to move forward with the idea and embark on a formal six-week statutory consultation.

If statutory notices are published, parents and other interested parties will have a further opportunity to have their say.
