In step to get to a healthier lifestyle

A team from Luton and Dunstable Hospital were among the best in the region as they walked more than 17,000 steps per day to encourage people to embrace a healthier lifestyle.
The team from the hospital’s catering department - known as ‘The Catering Crawlers’ - finished 5th in a competition involving 111 NHS teams from the East of England region, clocking up 17,3000 steps per day on average.
Health advice shows we should walk 10,000 steps a day to improve our health, but the average Briton manages just 3-4,000 - the equivalent of a brisk 10-minute walk.
Staff were given pedometers to record their daily steps over a six-week period.
The hospital’s occupational health manager Jennie Jones said: “This is an amazing result and is very encouraging to other staff. They should all be extremely proud of their achievement.
“Fifteen teams represented the L&D so it shows that with team effort, L&D staff really are committed to leading healthy active lives.”
Other teams from the L&D were from breast screening - 7th, operating theatre staff - 12th, and the x-ray team - 13th.
