Knife robber is behind bars

A man who robbed a Dunstable shop at knifepoint was jailed for 40 months last week.

Danny Cornick, 28, of New Woodfield Green, pleaded guilty to robbing a Co-Operative store on November 8 this year.

Cornick entered the Westfield Road shop at about 9pm and threatened the female shop assistant with a knife before forcing her to empty the till’s contents – thought to be about £700 - into a carrier bag.

Cornick then fled the store and the panic alarm was triggered.

Just a day later, detectives received information naming Cornick as the offender and after an examination of CCTV footage, he was arrested and charged.

While sentencing on Tuesday (December 11), Judge David Farrell said Cornick could have been facing five years in prison had he not admitted the offence at the first opportunity.

After sentencing, Det Con Rebecca Kitts, who investigated the incident, said: “Thankfully no one was hurt during the raid but the experience was very frightening for the shop staff involved and I hope that they can take some comfort in knowing that Cornick will be behind bars for a number of years.

“The sentence is also a reminder that serious crime will not be tolerated in Beds and we will do everything we can to find and prosecute those responsible.”
