A fleet of new buses that will be used on the Luton and Dunstable Guided Busway were revealed last week, thanks to a £1.7m investment from Arriva.

The 11 7.3litre Volvo vehicles will run along the existing number 38 route between Houghton Regis, Dunstable, Luton & Dunstable Hospital and Luton, until the busway is completed.

Arriva have now invested a total of 26 buses in the area over the last 12 months – a total investment of £4.5m.

Councillor Nigel Young said: “We are really thrilled to be working with Arriva to bring the Busway to life and these new, top-quality buses are a fantastic part of what will be a top-quality service.

“Linking up Luton, Dunstable and Houghton Regis is already bringing significant economic benefits to the area.”

However, residents are still not convinced the Busway project is the way to go, and took to Facebook to have their say.

Simon Bullough said: “Everyone thinks it’s a waste of time and money. Why can’t the council admit that they given birth to a white elephant?”

Neil Fish said: “Words do not describe how pointlessly useless this is. Waste of time, waste of money, no-one wants it, no-one needs it.”
