THERE were no librarians talking in hushed whispers at Dunstable Library as they urged bookworms to have their say in the Big Library Debate.

Families were invited to the Vernon Place library on Wednesday for the launch of the consultation, the results of which will help to shape the future of the service.

Libraries are at the heart of local communities and provide a gateway to information, learning and resources for all ages.

And Central Bedfordshire Council wants to ensure that the service is fit for the 21st century, making best use of modern technology and allowing easy access for everyone.

Engagement activities, asking residents for their views on how libraries could be more efficient and flexible to meet people’s needs, will be held at Dunstable Library until Friday, June 10.

Suggestions include different opening hours, library services from other venues and refreshment facilities.

After Friday, the engagement activities will then be set up at other libraries in the area, including Houghton Regis, from July 1 to 12.

Feedback from the sessions will help inform options for the future model of the library service.

The council will then formally seek feedback from the public, stakeholders and partners on specific options starting in August.

Councillor Brian Spurr, executive member responsible for sustainable communities services at Central Bedfordshire Council, said: “The role of the library has always been an important one to communities across Central Bedfordshire whether it be a place to read, learn new skills or socialise, and we want to carry on providing this valuable service.

“We want to know what people think about libraries and whether their full potential is being harnessed by those people using them.

“I would like to stress that although we will be looking for ideas on how to save money, we are also looking for creative ideas to make sure that libraries in Central Bedfordshire are being used in the best possible ways.”
