Former Dunstable publican Declan Duggan, 55, has written a powerful and moving account of his fight to change the law after his much loved 19-year-old son Kevin was killed by a drunken driver.

The launch of In the Name of the Son will take place at the Houses of Parliament next week.

It will be hosted by MP David Blunkett who has written the foreword and who was Home Secretary in 2002 when ‘Duggan’s Law’ was enacted.

It allowed blood samples to be taken from suspected drunk drivers, even if they were unconscious. It is estimated to have saved more than 500 lives in the past decade.

The Herald&Post led the campaign which was supported by several local VIPs.

Mr Duggan said: “There is nothing that prepares us for the loss of a child. I will have to live with the unbearable pain and profound loss until the end of my days.”

But he hopes readers will identify with his compelling story which is “sad, uplifting and all too common.”

> In the Name of the Son by Declan Duggan (Filament Publishing) costs £12. It is also available as an e-book.
