The once-famous home of local radio in Dunstable still remains unused more than two years since its last broadcast.

An application for planning permission was submitted – and consent was given – in 2003 to redevelop the site and build 12 residential flats.

However, these plans were scrapped and the permission expired.

Central Beds Council says that no one has enquired about the possible “alternative use” of the property since a year ago.

It has been given a market value of £550,000.

Opened as Chiltern Radio in 1981 and rebranded as Heart FM by owners Global Radio in 2009, the Chiltern Road property has been up for sale since July 2010.

The radio base is steeped in history and boasts famous alumni such as Chris Moyles, Dale Winton, Jeremy Beadle, Pat Sharp and Paul McKenna.

Lambert Hampton, of Luton, and Alexander & Co, of Dunstable, are agents that are jointly marketing the building.

The property’s rightmove.co.uk listing says the location “may continue to suit residential development and/or educational use” – the building was also once used by Chiltern Road Infants School.

A spokesman for Global Radio told the Gazette: “Heart owner Global Radio has instructed agents to sell it, although no buyer has been secured yet.”
