Scout helps signal a new era
Tom's green travel hopes
A Dunstable teenager found himself in the media spotlight on the VIP inaugural voyage of the high-speed Eurostar Express, from London to Paris.
Manshead School pupil Tom Rochester, 16, was among the travellers on the train trip, which started out from St Pancras Station.
Explorer scout Tom was interviewed by radio and TV teams before and during the journey.
He was one of a group of 20 young scouts who were invited to go along on the "carbon neutral" journey.
They were chosen because of their contributions to keeping the country cleaner, healthier and greener.
Scouting has had a green ethos throughout its 100-year history, and the scouts were keen to emphasise how relevant that still is in the modern world.
Tom said: "Being part of this Eurostar experience is really important to me, and I hope it will be the start of green travel throughout Europe."
The inaugural journey took the travellers through the Kent countryside and the Channel Tunnel to Paris in just over two hours.
Over in Paris, the scouts enjoyed seeing the sights in the French capital, including the Eiffel Tower, the River Seine and Notre Dame, before heading home again, the same day.
