Viking invasion heading for town
History festival will attract hundreds of re-enactors
A two-day festival of history will see the invasion of Dunstable by Vikings, Roundheads, Cavaliers and merry medieval characters
The big new Dunstable Festival of Living History will turn back time from 10am to 5pm on Saturday, July 5 and Sunday, July 6.
Up to 1,000 re-enactors will head this way for the packed weekend of family fun - and the best news is that it's all free.
Costumed characters from The Vikings and local group Wryngwyrm, The Sealed Knot and the Medieval Siege Society will set up camps, and will roam around, too.
Favourite features of Dunstable Tudor Day will also be included, and Henry VIII and Elizabeth I will visit with their colourful courts.
The festival starts with a spectacular Civil War re-enactment, as The Sealed Knot 'storms' the Priory Church.
Re-enactors will gather at 10am in Priory Gardens on Saturday, July 5, and the battle should begin at about 10.15am.
Dunstable Town Council is organising the festival, building on the success of Dunstable Tudor Day.
Events and health and safety officer Shaun Simpson said: 'It is one of the largest festivals of its type in this area now, and it is the centrepiece of Dunstable Town Council's events programme for 2008.'
The two main festival sites are Priory Gardens, off High Street South, and the Bennett Memorial Recreation Ground, in Bull Pond Lane.
All sorts of events and activities, including children's entertainment, a craft fair, stalls and hog roasts have been lined up, and pubs will have special themed menus.
Dunstable town guides will conduct tours of the historic town centre, starting out from Priory Gardens.
And the Priory Church will join in the fun with events during the weekend.
