Karting youngsters took to the slopes when it was safe to play on estate roads

The Laing estate in Dunstable was still being built when this photo of Appleby Gardens was taken in around 1963.

That’s Langdale Road in the background.

The children could speed down the slope in their home-made karts, secure in the knowledge that there was hardly any other traffic to cause danger.

Trees and further building have changed the scene a little today.

Laing’s building depot was near the top of Appleby Gardens.

When the estate was nearing completion, the depot became the site of today’s Langdale Church, alongside the shopping centre.

> A similar photo of the karting youngsters is included in a new book of Yesteryear photos titled Dunstable Through Time.

Signed copies are available from the author, John Buckledee, at 69 Derwent Drive, Dunstable, LU6 3PB.

The price of the book is £17 which includes postage and packing.
