Houghton Regis Leisure Centre swimming pool reopened on a phased basis on Saturday, July 26.

Central Bedfordshire Council invested the money, from the leisure management contract, into re-opening the pool and improving pool-side facilities.

The pumps have been replaced and the water circulation in the pool has been improved, the new roof for the changing rooms is nearly complete and refurbishment continues on the wetside changing rooms, swimmers will use the current dry-side facilities until work is complete.

Councillor Brian Spurr, said: “There’s been a lot of background work to develop a Leisure Strategy to help us plan for the future, as well as negotiations on this contract which means we can re-open the pool. So it’s really great to see that this work has led to a point where we will see people back in the pool and it won’t be too long before the whole refurbishment is complete.

“When we did our £100k refurbishment of the gym in 2011, the user numbers shot up and people were really impressed with the facility. To have the swimming pool open again will be really great and opens up all sorts of physical activity opportunities in the area.”

The Leisure Strategy is designed to increase opportunities for local residents to get involved in sports and physical activities.

Cllr Spurr added: “We were really keen to get the pool open for the summer holidays so that children and families can enjoy the facilities. Of course we’ll be trying to keep disruption to a minimum during the ongoing, final works and people should be able to carry on going to their classes or to the gym without too much inconvenience. If there are any issues please speak to Leisure Centre staff who can help.”

Building works will continue over the coming weeks but the pool is ready for use and all other activities are unaffected. For more information go to www.centralbedfordshire.gov.uk/leisure
