Rep playing to strengths in whodunit

Taking on the best-selling murder mystery of all time is quite the theatrical challenge, but Dunstable Rep will no doubt put on a superb show once again.

And Then There Were None is based on Agatha Christie’s novel, which tells the thrilling tale of 10 people who are trapped on a remote island off the Devon coast in 1939.

Although they are the only people visiting the fashionable Art Deco villa, each of them is murdered one by one, in a manner paralleling the old nursery rhyme Ten Little Soldiers.

Director Alistair Brown said: “Theatre offers a director all sorts of intriguing possibilities, but nothing quite beats the attraction of a genuinely popular period whodunit. Agatha Christie’s novel And Then There Were None is the best-selling murder mystery of all time. At 100 million copies it is in the top five best-selling single-volume books (excluding the Bible and the Koran).

“However, there is a real challenge here: stage productions of her plays can easily lurch into derisible tackiness when compared to the high production values of TV’s Poirot and Miss Marple.

“This is where the Rep plays to its strengths with our award-winning reputation for stylish acting and imaginative quality sets.

“It’s worth coming along to see if we have pulled it off, and unless you know the story, I guarantee you will never work out whodunit!”
