REVIEW: The Phantom of the Opera

The Phantom of the Opera is, without a shadow of a doubt, a must-see musical filled with theatrical moments that will take your breath away.
It is a show that despite what is going on in your life, or what mood you may be in at the time, will make you unintentionally forget the outside world and be utterly transfixed by the wonders of the stage.
For me, it wasn’t just the incredibly impressive effects of live theatre and the show’s splendid set, but what captivated me from beginning to end, was Phantom’s leading lady, Katie Hall.
Having started out training with the National Youth Music Theatre, Katie took part in the BBC’s search for Nancy in I’d Do Anything and although not making it to the live shows, she caught a legendary composer’s eyes, Andrew Lloyd Webber.
Now, at Milton Keynes Theatre, Katie has been cast as the show’s leading lady and I can see exactly why. Her stunning performance gave me goose bumps throughout as she stood in front of a packed out theatre and well and truly delivered.
Playing a vulnerable character seemed to suit her delicate frame and features, but then out boomed this exquisite voice of angel that frankly you could only listen to in complete awe.
So, teamed up with the talented Earl Carpenter (the Phantom) it made for a real treat, leaving myself and the audience so impressed that a standing ovation was awarded to the line-up, as well as applause that seemed to be never ending.
The beautiful sound of the orchestra and the opera that belted out from the talented cast members weren’t the only aspects of the show that secured such a response though.
In fact, it was the fascinating backdrops of the set that really allowed you to get lost in the world of theatre and be wholeheartedly gripped by a story that has quite rightly celebrated 25 years of success.
And without giving too much away, the explosiveness of the chandelier almost mimicked the powerful performances as the audience was left gasping in delight.
