These quirky pavement ads are a walkover!
Pavement advert for Central Bedfordshire College
You’ve heard the word on the street. And now you can see it, too!
All thanks to Central Bedfordshire College.
There I was the other day, out for a stroll around the streets of Dunstable.
Suddenly I spotted “writing” on the pavement.
No, it wasn’t graffiti. It was “clean advertising”.
The gist of this is that you put down a stencil on the pavement and “jet wash” over it.
After the quick clean-up, you lift up the stencil and, ta da, you have a temporary advert.
Anyway. I spotted two of these quirky college “adverts” at the corner of First Avenue and Langdale Road.
They had an arrow pointing towards town, saying “Spaces still available. Enrol now!”
And they even had the college name, the logo and the web address.
Impressive. It turns out that the college had 25 of these temporary adverts put in place a few weeks ago.
It was all done in the evening to avoid getting in anyone’s way.
And the company behind it is Street Advertising Services.
Apparently, people popping into the college were talking about the adverts.
They fade after being walked over umpteen times, of course.
But it looks like they worked – they certainly weren’t clean forgotten!
Power failures hit Dunstable a little while ago.
There was much talk on the web and on social networking sites about this.
One person posted this message on the About Dunstable Facebook page.
“My parents were in one of the areas that were affected and my Mum was in her ‘electric recliner’. Yes, you’ve guessed it, she got stuck in the chair because the leg rest wouldn’t go down and the battery back-up had run out!
“Luckily my Dad was there to assist ~ and they did laugh about it when she got out!
“At least they know they have to replace the batteries in the back-up power box!”
Oh dear! Sounds like this poor lady really did have to “sit tight”...

Deadpan comic Jack Dee is the panel chairman these days.
There were lots of Bedfordshire references from Jack.
Some of the fascinating facts were even news to me!
He greeted the audience saying: “You join us this week in Dunstable. The undisputed town in Bedfordshire.
“The name Dunstable is derived from an early English word, meaning ‘not quite Luton’.”
What can he mean? I’m sorry, I haven’t a clue!
