You can help dig for Priory Church remains

Once the work has been completed to conserve the gateway leading into Priory Gardens next to Priory Church, Dunstable, there will be a ‘dig’ to explore any remains of the foundations of the building around the gateway.

This will be a community event which will involve all age groups either taking part or watching.

The Friends of Priory Church and Gardens welcomed the involvement of Central Beds College students who would be making a gate to replace the small (postern) pedestrian gateway. One day it is hoped to be able to replace the large gates.

Through a number of talks by supporters of the Friends, the group has attracted new members.

Why not join if you are interested in helping to conserve Priory House and the area around? The next event is on Friday, April 25, 7 for 7.30pm, in the Priory House Undercroft.

Around The World In Eight Wines is a talk by master of wine Derek Smedley and, of course, wine tasting and refreshments! (Friends £20, guests £22).

On Friday, May 2 at 7pm is a light-hearted talk by Dr Susie White (editor of the Society for Clay Pipe Research), ‘Put that in your pipe and smoke it’.

The talk links in with the wall painting showing what is thought to be one of the earliest depictions of a man smoking a pipe. (Friends £4, guests £5). For either event contact

The AGM is on Thursday, May 8, 2.30pm in Priory House. For more information go to or - Your Council – click on F (alphabet) then Friends of Priory House and Gardens.
